The one that beats everything else
Board games with a numbered track and a die. Moving a counter along a line of numbers is among the most evidence-supported early maths activities there is, and it costs nothing. It builds the mental number line, which is what later arithmetic sits on.
Snakes and ladders is more useful at five than any app.
In the kitchen
Halving and doubling a recipe, which is ratio without the word. Weighing, which is estimation followed by measurement. Cutting things into equal parts, which is fractions with a genuine argument attached because somebody gets the bigger piece.
Timing several things to finish together is the hardest and best of these, and it is real planning.
In a shop
A small budget and a list. Comparing prices per unit. Working out whether the bigger box is actually better value, which frequently it is not. Estimating the total before the till and seeing how close they were.
Real money, real constraint, immediate feedback.
Around the house
- Setting the table, which is one-to-one correspondence for young children and division for older ones
- Sorting washing, which is classification
- Folding, which is symmetry and fractions
- Measuring a space to see whether something fits
- Keeping score in anything
- Working out how long until something, which children find genuinely hard
Games that are quietly mathematical
Cards, particularly ones with adding or matching. Dominoes, which builds instant recognition of small quantities. Dice games. Anything with a running score. Chess and draughts for planning. Battleships for coordinates.
Talking, which matters as much as doing
Estimate before counting. Ask how they worked it out rather than whether it is right. Notice quantities out loud: that is about half, that is nearly double, there are more of those than these.
The habit of asking how they got there is the single most useful one. It treats maths as reasoning rather than as producing an answer, and it shows you exactly where a misunderstanding sits.
What to avoid
Timed drills for a child who is anxious about maths, which reliably makes it worse. Saying you were never any good at maths, which hands over a permission slip. And correcting quickly, which removes the part where they find their own error.
Number sense comes before arithmetic and predicts more of what follows. All of the above builds it, and none of it feels like maths.
