STEM vs STEAM: What Is the Difference?
The A is not decoration. What adding arts to STEM actually changes about how a child approaches a problem, and where the distinction is oversold.

One letter, and a genuine argument underneath it that is worth understanding rather than settling.
The straightforward answer
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEAM adds Arts. The addition came from people arguing that separating technical education from creative work produces narrower thinkers.
What adding the A actually changes
Three things, and only the first is obvious.
Working without a correct answer. Technical subjects at school are mostly presented as having one. Art never is. A child who has only met the first kind struggles the first time a problem is genuinely open, which is what real engineering and real science are like.
Judging your own work. In maths you check the answer. In art you decide whether it is finished, which is a different and more demanding act. It is also the skill required for anything nobody has done before.
Making the result usable by people. Design, communication, whether a thing is comprehensible. A technically correct solution that nobody can use has failed, and this is the part engineering education is most often criticised for neglecting.
The argument against
Worth stating fairly, because it is not silly.
Critics say the A was added for funding and marketing rather than for pedagogy, that it dilutes technical rigour, and that in practice STEAM often means a science lesson with a poster at the end. That last criticism lands: decorating a project is not what the argument was about.
The stronger version of the objection is that adding art to a science lesson is not integration. Integration means the creative work is load-bearing, not appended.
What matters more than either acronym
Whether the child is investigating something with an unknown answer, or following instructions to a known one. That distinction predicts what they learn far better than which letters are in the programme's name.
A STEM lesson where a child designs their own test is better than a STEAM lesson where they follow twelve steps and then colour something in.
The practical version for a family
Ignore the label. Ask two questions about any activity: did the child decide anything, and was the outcome unknown when they started.
If both answers are yes, it does not much matter what it is called.
