Questions worth chasing
These are better than activities because they have no supplied method. The child has to invent the test, which is the part that matters.
- Does bread go mouldy faster in the fridge, the bread bin or on the windowsill?
- Which spot in the garden is warmest, and does that change during the day?
- Do all apples brown at the same speed? What stops it?
- How much water does a plant actually need before it suffers?
- Which route home is really fastest, and is it the same in the morning?
- Does the dog prefer one of these two foods, and how would we know?
Every one of them requires deciding what to measure, keeping other things the same, and repeating it. That is the method, learned by needing it.
Observation over weeks
Underrated because it is slow, and closer to real science than anything that happens in ten minutes.
Keep a moon diary for a month. Watch one tree through a year and draw it monthly. Record the temperature at the same time daily. Watch what arrives on a windowsill bird feeder and when.
The learning is in noticing a pattern nobody pointed out.
Kitchen science that is actually science
Baking is chemistry with a deadline. Leave out the raising agent deliberately and compare. Try the same recipe with butter and oil. Whip cream past the point it should stop.
The rule that makes it science rather than cooking: change one thing, keep everything else the same, predict first.
Taking things apart
An old radio, a broken toy, a torch, a clock from a charity shop. Unplugged and unpowered, with a screwdriver.
Nothing needs to go back together. The value is in seeing that the inside of things is comprehensible rather than magic, and children who have taken something apart approach the world differently.
What to avoid
Kits with numbered steps and a photograph of the result, which are craft with a science label. Demonstrations you already know the outcome of, presented as discovery. And answering the question yourself when the child is halfway to it.
The three sentences worth using
What do you think will happen? How could we find out? What would we expect to see if you were right?
Those three turn almost anything into science, including a disagreement about which biscuit is best.
