What brain science genuinely establishes about childhood, and the considerable gap between that and the claims made in its name. This is a field where the popular version has run a long way ahead of the research.
What is reasonably established
The brain develops for a long time. Structural maturation continues into the mid-twenties, with the prefrontal regions associated with planning and impulse control among the last. This is real and it is the single most useful fact for a parent.
Experience shapes structure. Synaptic connections are formed and pruned in response to use. What a child does affects how their brain develops.
Some periods are more sensitive than others. Vision and language have windows during which typical input matters particularly. This is well supported for these specific systems.
Severe deprivation causes lasting harm. The research on children raised in profoundly neglectful institutions is unambiguous and it is one of the strongest findings in the field.
Sleep matters for consolidation. Memory consolidation during sleep is well evidenced.
What is claimed and is not established
The first three years determine everything. An overstatement of the sensitive period research. The brain remains plastic and change remains possible. This claim has caused genuine anxiety in parents for no good reason.
Left-brained and right-brained people. Not a thing. Functions are lateralised to a degree; people are not.
Learning styles. Visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. Repeatedly tested, repeatedly unsupported, still taught.

Specific products build specific brain areas. Almost never demonstrated, frequently asserted.
Brain scans show a child is behind. Group averages do not diagnose individuals, and the imaging cannot do what the marketing implies.
The structural problem
Neuroscience carries authority, so attaching it to a claim makes the claim sound better established than it is. Studies have found that adding irrelevant neuroscience to an explanation makes people rate it more convincing.
That is exactly why the field attracts overstatement, and why a parent should be more sceptical when brain imaging is mentioned rather than less.
How to read a headline
Ask: was this in humans or animals. How many participants. Does it show correlation or intervention. Does the finding actually support the practical advice attached to it, or is the advice a leap.
Most of the gap between research and headline occurs in that last step.
What actually follows for a parent
Very little that is surprising, which is itself informative. Relationships, sleep, conversation, play, and not being frightened by claims about windows closing.
The genuine neuroscience mostly supports what developmental psychology already said. When it appears to support something startling, that is usually the reporting rather than the research.
