Reasonably well supported
Self-regulation. The most consistent finding. Children exert more self-control in play they have chosen than in situations imposed on them, and play-rich settings are associated with better regulation. The mechanism is plausible: staying in role, waiting a turn and following a rule you agreed to are all inhibition, practised voluntarily.
Language. Pretend play generates language ordinary activity does not: talking about absent things, taking another voice, negotiating rules. Associations between pretend play and language development are fairly consistent.
Social competence. Children who play together unsupervised negotiate, fall out and repair. Repair in particular is only practised when no adult resolves it.
Guided play for specific concepts. The strongest experimental evidence in the whole area. Studies comparing guided play with both free play and direct instruction on early maths and spatial concepts have tended to favour guided play.
Genuinely mixed
Later academic outcomes. The claim that play-based early years produce better school results later is not settled. Some longitudinal work supports it, some finds early advantages from direct instruction that fade, and comparisons across countries with different school starting ages are confounded by nearly everything.
The most defensible summary is that early direct instruction produces early academic gains that tend to wash out, and that play-based approaches do not produce a lasting deficit. That is a weaker claim than usually made and it is the one the data supports.
Play interventions. Programmes designed to improve specific skills through play show inconsistent results, with the familiar problem that gains often appear on the trained task and not beyond it.
Why the mixedness matters
Because the case for play is frequently made with more confidence than the evidence carries, and overstatement is fragile. A parent or a school that adopts it on the basis of an inflated claim will abandon it when the claim is challenged.
The honest case is still strong: play is where several important capacities are practised voluntarily, it does not appear to cost later academic outcomes, and it is how children spend their attention willingly. That is enough.
The methodological problem
Worth naming. You cannot randomly assign children to a childhood, so most of this is correlational. Families who provide play-rich environments differ in many other ways. The experimental work is mostly short-term and narrow.
This is a field where the direction of the evidence is fairly clear and the magnitude is not, and saying so is more useful than picking a side.
