The finding
Across a number of longitudinal studies, measures of executive function in early childhood predict later academic achievement, sometimes as strongly as early measures of literacy or numeracy.
The components most implicated are working memory and inhibition, with cognitive flexibility somewhat behind.
Why it should be true
The mechanism is not mysterious. Almost every classroom task requires holding instructions in mind, resisting a more appealing alternative, and switching between activities on demand.
A child weak in any of those will underperform relative to what they understand, because the understanding cannot get through the machinery required to demonstrate it.
This is also why executive function difficulties frequently present as underachievement rather than as an obvious deficit: the child knows the material and cannot deliver it under classroom conditions.
What the finding does not license
Three things, and all three are regularly claimed.
It is not causal evidence. These are correlational studies. Executive function, academic achievement and a range of family and environmental factors are entangled, and the studies that adjust for background find the association reduced.
It does not mean training it improves school performance. This is the crucial gap. Commercial executive function training reliably improves performance on the trained exercise and reliably fails to transfer to schoolwork. Predicting an outcome and being a lever on it are different properties.
It does not make it a fixed trait. Executive function develops well into the twenties and varies with sleep, stress and circumstances. A poor score is a snapshot.
What actually helps
Given that direct training does not transfer, the useful interventions are indirect.
Reducing the load. One instruction at a time, external memory aids, fluency in the basics so less has to be held.
Scaffolding, then withdrawing it. Providing from outside what the child cannot yet provide internally, and removing it gradually. This is what good teaching does anyway.
Sleep. The effect on executive function is measurable and it is the most commonly neglected variable.
Physical activity, with modest but reasonably consistent associations.
Complex, sustained, self-directed play, where children exert these capacities voluntarily.
The practical framing
A child who is underachieving relative to what they clearly understand is worth considering in these terms rather than in terms of effort.
It is a more accurate account, and it points at changes that work rather than at pressure that does not.
