How Does Movement Help Children Learn?

Reasonably well supported
Acute effects on attention. A bout of moderate physical activity is associated with better attention and executive function in the period immediately afterwards. Effects are short-lived and reasonably consistent across studies.
The practical implication is specific: movement before a demanding task, not as a reward after it.
Sleep. Physically active children fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply, and sleep affects attention, mood and memory consolidation. This chain is the most reliable route from movement to learning.
The foundation for handwriting. Climbing, hanging and carrying build trunk and shoulder stability. A child without it cannot sit comfortably or steady a hand, and this is a genuine and under-recognised cause of writing difficulty.
Mood. Consistent associations between activity and lower rates of anxiety and low mood in children.
Where the evidence is thinner
That exercise raises academic attainment. The association exists and is modest. Intervention studies adding physical activity to school days show inconsistent effects on attainment, partly because the time comes from somewhere.
That specific movement programmes improve reading. Various commercial programmes claim this. Evidence is weak.
Brain gym and similar exercises. Not supported.
That crawling is necessary for later reading. A persistent claim with no good evidence behind it.
The embodied cognition point
There is real research suggesting that gesture and physical action support learning of certain concepts, particularly spatial and mathematical ones. Children who gesture while explaining tend to understand better, and encouraging gesture can help.
This is genuine and it is narrower than the sweeping claims sometimes built on it.
What follows practically
Movement before homework rather than after. Outdoor time daily, which does several of these jobs at once. Climbing and hanging specifically, for the postural foundation. Breaks in long tasks. And not treating physical activity as the thing to cut when academic pressure rises, which is the standard response and is counterproductive.
The honest summary
Movement is not a learning intervention with a large effect on attainment. It is a precondition for a child being in a state where learning is possible, and it improves sleep, mood, attention and the physical foundation for writing.
That is a strong enough case without overstating it.
