How Does Attention Affect Learning?
Nothing gets learned that was not attended to first. How attention is allocated, why interest changes capacity, and what divided attention actually costs.

Nothing gets learned that was not attended to first. That sentence is close to a tautology and it has consequences that are not obvious.
Attention as a bottleneck
Information that is not attended to does not enter working memory, and information that does not enter working memory is not available for encoding into long-term memory. Attention is the gate, and everything downstream depends on it.
This is why a child physically present in a lesson for forty minutes may retain almost nothing from it, and why time on task is such a poor measure of learning.
Attention is not one thing
At least three, and they fail differently.
Selective attention: picking one stream out of many. Fails in a noisy room, or with a phone face-up on the table.
Sustained attention: staying with it. Fails when tired, when the task is dull, or when it is too hard.
Executive attention: noticing you have drifted and returning. This is the one adults use constantly and children are still building.
Why interest changes capacity
The same child who cannot attend for ten minutes to handwriting will attend for forty to something they chose. This is not hypocrisy and it is not evidence they could do the first if they wanted to enough.
Interest reduces the effort required to sustain attention. A child overriding low interest is spending executive resources on the overriding, which then are not available for the task. Adults do this better, which is why they underestimate how hard it is.
The cost of divided attention
Well established and larger than people expect. Switching between tasks carries a cost each time, and the resumption is not instant. Studying with notifications arriving is not studying with a small penalty; it is repeatedly restarting.
The relevant finding for homework is that the presence of a phone, even face-down and silent, is associated with measurably worse performance. Not using it. Its presence.
What follows practically
Reduce competing input before doing anything else. A cleared surface and a closed door outperform every technique.
Match difficulty. Too hard produces avoidance that looks like inattention. Too easy produces drift.
Shorter, more often. Ten minutes attended to beats twenty-five endured.
Movement before, not after. Children generally settle better to a demanding task following movement.
Protect deep absorption when it happens. Interrupting a child who is genuinely engaged is more expensive than it looks, because the return is not free.
Sleep, which affects all three kinds of attention measurably and is the most commonly traded away.
The practical version: stop trying to increase a child's attention and start reducing what is competing for it.
