Singapore Education System Explained

World-leading maths results alongside an acknowledged pressure problem. How the teaching approach works, and what Singapore itself is trying to change.

The maths approach, which is the genuinely exportable part

Singapore maths is a real method rather than a brand, and its features are specific.

Concrete, pictorial, abstract. A concept is met first with physical objects, then with a drawing, then with symbols. The sequence is deliberate and children are not moved on early.

Bar modelling. Problems are drawn as proportional bars before any arithmetic. This makes the structure of a word problem visible, and it is the single most useful technique here for a parent to learn.

Mastery, with fewer topics. The curriculum covers less ground per year and covers it thoroughly. Nothing is revisited annually in the way spiral curricula do.

Number bonds early. Deep fluency with how numbers decompose, before procedures.

Whole-class teaching with everybody kept together, supported rather than set into ability groups early.

The rest of the system

Strong teacher training and status. A bilingual policy in which children learn English plus a mother tongue. Historically, streaming by attainment relatively early, which Singapore has been reforming.

The pressure problem

Openly acknowledged within Singapore and the reason for a decade of reform.

The Primary School Leaving Examination has historically determined secondary pathways, producing intense competition around age twelve. Private tuition is near-universal, with a large majority of children receiving it, which extends the working day considerably and creates a second, paid education system.

Youth mental health has been a stated public concern.

What Singapore is changing

Worth knowing, because admiring accounts often describe a system its own government is moving away from.

Grading has been broadened to reduce fine-grained differentiation. Streaming is being replaced with subject-based banding, so a child can be at different levels in different subjects. Some examinations have been removed at younger ages. And there has been an explicit official push against excessive competition.

What a family can use

Bar modelling. Genuinely useful, learnable in an evening, and it makes word problems tractable for children who find them impossible.

Concrete before abstract. Objects, then a drawing, then symbols, and not rushing the first two.

Fewer things, understood properly. Slowing down is usually the right instinct when a child is struggling.

What not to import

The tuition culture and the examination pressure, which are the parts Singapore is trying to reduce.

The teaching method and the pressure are separable, and only one of them is worth copying.
