How Did the Gurukul Education System Work?
The daily shape of it: the household, the routine, the labour, the recitation and the long apprenticeship that made a subject stick.

The daily shape of it: the household, the routine, the labour, the recitation and the long apprenticeship that made a subject stick.
The household
A student joined the teacher's home. This was the whole structure. There was no institution, no timetable set elsewhere, and no separation between where you learned and where you lived.
The practical consequence is that the teacher observed the student continuously, across years, in ordinary conditions. Nothing in modern schooling replicates that, and it explains why the relationship could carry so much.
The day
Early. Recitation before dawn was common, on the reasoning that a rested mind holds material better, which is not a bad reasoning.
The day alternated between instruction, independent recitation, household work and further study. Work was distributed among students: gathering fuel, tending animals, fetching water, preparing food.
That labour is worth pausing on. It was not a fee paid in kind. It was understood as part of the formation, on the view that a person who cannot look after themselves and others is not educated.
The method
Three stages, in a fixed order.
Shravana, hearing. The text is received orally, accurately, from a teacher who received it the same way.
Manana, reflection. Turning it over, questioning it, discussing.
Nididhyasana, sustained absorption. Holding it until it is not information but understanding.
Note the order: accurate retention first, understanding after. Modern instinct reverses this, and it is worth noticing that the older sequence has some support in what is known about how fluent recall frees capacity for reasoning.
Memorisation, and why it was not rote
The precision was extraordinary, with elaborate techniques for verifying that a text had been transmitted without corruption over generations.
But memorisation was the beginning rather than the end. A memorised text was the material for a lifetime of commentary, and the tradition's commentarial literature is enormous. Holding the text was what made the argument possible.
Progression
By mastery. A student stayed with something until the teacher judged it held. There were no years to be passed and no cohort to keep pace with, which is only possible when the numbers are small.
The relationship
Long, personal, and asymmetric. The teacher's authority was considerable and the student's deference expected. That produced depth, and it also produced a structure with few safeguards, which is worth naming rather than admiring uncritically.
What the shape actually delivered
Continuity of relationship, integration of learning and living, mastery-based pace, and knowledge held accurately enough to argue with.
Those four are the transferable part, and none of them requires anybody to move into a teacher's house.
