What learning Sanskrit genuinely offers a child, and a clear-eyed look at the claims that outrun the evidence. Both halves matter, because the overstated claims tend to discredit the real ones.
What is genuinely on offer
Grammatical precision. Sanskrit grammar is unusually systematic, and Panini's description of it is one of the most rigorous analyses of any language ever produced. A child who studies it seriously meets a formal system of real elegance, and that experience transfers to how they think about structure generally.
Phonetic range and accuracy. The sound system is organised by place of articulation, and learning it involves producing distinctions many languages do not make. Children who learn it young acquire those sounds easily.
Access to texts in the original. Translation always loses something, particularly in poetry and in philosophical vocabulary where a single term carries a range no English word matches. Reading directly is a genuine and unrepeatable benefit.
A doorway into a body of knowledge. Mathematics, grammar, logic, medicine, poetics. Much of it remains untranslated.
Connection to an inheritance. A child who can read what their tradition actually says, rather than what somebody reports it says, stands differently in relation to it.
The ordinary benefits of any second language. Learning any additional language is associated with some cognitive and metalinguistic advantages, and Sanskrit is a language.
Where the claims outrun the evidence
This section exists because these claims circulate widely, and because a family deciding on the basis of them may feel misled later.
That Sanskrit uniquely improves memory or intelligence. There is a small amount of neuroimaging work on people who memorise large amounts of Sanskrit, and it is consistent with what is known about intensive memorisation generally. It does not establish that Sanskrit specifically produces effects other demanding memorisation would not.
That it is the most suitable language for computing. This traces to a NASA researcher's paper about knowledge representation, which is regularly reported as something it did not claim. It is not a finding about programming languages.
That its sounds have measurable physiological effects. Chanting anything rhythmically has effects on breathing and arousal, which are real and not specific to the language.
That it is the mother of all languages. Sanskrit is an early and important Indo-European language and a vital source for historical linguistics. It is a sibling of Latin and Greek rather than their parent.
Why the distinction is worth making
Avdhara's position is that a tradition does not need borrowed scientific authority to be worth passing on. The real benefits listed above are substantial and stand on their own.
Overclaiming risks a child who later finds out, and who then doubts the parts that were true.
